Germany has opposed Türkiye’s application to the European Commission for recognising döner kebab as a traditional product in the EU. Bereket Döner, a prominent name in Turkish gastronomy, has countered these objections by presenting a comprehensive academic study in defence of Türkiye’s claim.
At a press event in Istanbul on 5th December, Bereket Döner shared findings that emphasise the deep cultural and historical roots of döner kebab in Turkish tradition.
“Our research demonstrates that döner is deeply rooted in Turkish history and culture,” declared Mevlüt Ceyhun Tekdemir, Vice Chairman of Bereket Döner’s Board. “From Takiyeddin Efendi’s 16th-century mechanical drawings to insights from Evliya Çelebi, our evidence leaves no doubt about döner’s origins. We trust the European Commission to recognise this heritage appropriately.”
The study, Türkiye’s World-Famous Delicacy: Döner, presents a wealth of artefacts and historical documentation from the Ottoman era, affirming döner’s status as both a cultural treasure and a culinary icon.
Döner: A Tradition of Togetherness
“Döner is not about division; it’s about unity,” Tekdemir emphasised. “It’s a culinary tradition that brings people together, blending cultures and tastes in a unique way.”
Additionally, Bereket Döner announced plans to expand its Döner Point brand across Europe, starting with Germany, to bring authentic Turkish flavours to more people.
“We’re excited to bring the true taste of Turkish döner to Europe,” added Tekdemir. “Our expansion strategy reflects our commitment to preserving and sharing this cultural treasure with the world.”
Bereket Döner’s initiatives aim to preserve the legacy of Turkish döner while promoting its cultural importance globally.
